And that’s how the weather describes itself right here in the city that never sleeps. Okay, now all my dear au corant readers out there, don’t you jump into any conclusions regarding my present abode of inhabitancy, coz yeah, I know that they refer to “New York” as the ‘city that never sleeps’, but then I’d started calling Dubai the same, a very long while ago when I didn’t even know the city existed. Alright, not literally, but still ages ago, all the same. Talking about NY reminds me of the much talked about movie “New York” starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh which is releasing in Dubai today. The promos seem quite interesting and it’s nice to see the new Barbie girl with this whole ‘no-make-up’ look for a change. Anyway, let’s wait and see if this one gets lucky at the box office.
Meanwhile, things are moving on great here. Freaking out on movies, shopping with mom. Everything’s perfect. That’s the kind of effect this city has on you, you live here for two days and there, it looks like you’ve been here forever or something. It’s like, everything’s back to normal. Not that anything was far from normalcy, earlier, but you know what I mean, this whole being away from your parents and the city you’ve been brought up in is sort of odd, given the number of years I’ve stayed here. But then life must move on and it did, and I’m glad to say that I’ve completed a whole year of my course. Isn’t that great? And that too, it seems like right now or something, that I was sitting in front of this very monitor, blogging out my woes on how off-hand my dad is at breaking news and how petrified I was at the idea of living in a hostel. With time I settled in pretty well, and while my hostel became my home, my friends became my life.
The five of us have become inseparable, and our’s were the only room in the wing which had five inhabitants. Well, what is college life if it’s not about breaking rules? Really, in this one year, if you ask me for any one thing that we’ve not made a pass at, I’d probably sit here for the rest of my life, scanning every inch of my brain to come up with something. Once we’ve gone off to the mountains with our backpacks and spent an afternoon there. We even know the snakes of the mountains by their names. Believe me, we’ve tried our hand at everything and even the guys envy us. Oh and we’ve held the maximum number of parties in our room. Um, and yeah written the maximum number of apology letters for the same, as well. Well, it sort of comes as a package, if you ask me. The party and the apologies, that is. Our warden actually refers to our room 305, as “The Amusement Plaza”, coz it’s the destination for people who wanna keep themselves amused. Well our room’s our masti ki paatshala, in one word. Oh wait, 3 words, I mean.
I’m sure the college has not witnessed a jovial lot as ours in anytime in the near past. And of course, when you don’t fit in with the crowd you tend to have problems stalking you. And so did we. They were there, most of the time. Problems. Problems with teachers. Problems with seniors. Problems with classmates. And of course, problems between ourselves. Coz in such conservative a college where even the blink of an eye of a student during a lecture would end in his suspension, our actions were beyond what their imaginations could reach.
In a college where every student is expected to come to college half an hour before it commences, fight for the first benches, wait eagerly to hold on to each and every word of the professor, as though they are pearls hurling from his mouth, clasp them and replicate them ditto onto the note book kept open before them and go back home the minute the last bell rings, it was difficult for a few people like us to stay on. I’m not talking about just the five of us, but there were so many other students who’d agree with us. Our batch as a whole was an eccentric one and it definitely shook the college. Our principal would vouch for that, he’s even told us that he’s never seen a daring batch as ours. Which might be true, coz we do still see our seniors being twisted on their fingertips. Well, most of them go with the flow. But there are a few like us, who are like Virgin mobiles. Yeah baby, we think hatke. And that’s exactly why had the time of our lives even in spite of being in such a strict college. We had some real fun. And I never knew the word ‘fun’ was so awesome! Even though I keep using that word very often, my college life redefined the meaning of that word for me. So, what if there were problems? I mean, is there anybody in this world out there reading this who can come to the front and say, “Dude! My life is absolutely devoid of problems and I love it!” But despite problems, whatsoever, I loved it. Every moment spent there.
Anyway, I was a little carried away I guess. Let’s get back now.
I’m meeting up with Ferrin and Gatha, my school buddies tonight. Isn’t that cool? You know, no matter how many friends you make or how close you get with new people, there are some relations in life you’d still want to hold on to. This is one such example, I guess. Ferrin and I have been together for a whooping 9 years, and we’re still the best of friends. Well, talk about bonding!

Oh I have to agree with you when it comes to Katrina. I don't particularly like her but she's been looking really nice in New York. I heard the film's just about okay, though.
And I didn't know NYC was called the city that never sleeps. When I was younger, we used to call Bombay that. By the time I grew a little older, we started calling Delhi that. And I think it would be fair if I call my city that now. I think most cities never sleep now, there's been so much of change in the past 10 years or so it's like a generation has gone through.
Good to know that you guys are having fun at college. Show them guys how life should be lived! I'm still waiting for my turn to go to a hostel, though. I think it'll be fun. The past 1 year went really speedily, I have to agree. Although my college wasn't half as fan as yours was, but still, it just flew by. I can still remember myself running here and there finding colleges. And the next thing you know, you're actually gonna become a senior or something. Boy, does life go fast or what?
hi kuttu, missing u already! take care, princess!
@Ish: Yeah, Kat's looking great in the movie. And she is actually acting. Yup, she is.
And yeah that's true, in today's fast paced life no city can afford to sleep. I mean, they gotta keep running with the others in the global race.
Oh, you are a day scholar aren't you? Well, you sure are missing out on something. Hope you'd get a chance to enjoy the same, though, soon:)
@Geets: Me too, Mom!:(
Oh my God... you make me feel all nostalgic about my college and my friends !!
it sounds like a tough college but then I guess thats half the fun right !
All these college memoirs get stored up to use as stories later on in life... The more fun they are, the better...
