New Year Musings

Five days into the new year, and it already feels like a month. Pretty much like how a sem at college already makes me feel like I’m at the verge of completing my course or something. It’s funny how the lil tricks our minds play on us delude us often. Really, sometimes it’s my flexibility that surprises me, as opposed to my initial reluctance to accept the way of life here.

Alright, before moving on, I’d like to wish all my fellow blogger mates a very beautiful new year ahead. According to me, a reflection of the previous year, at the beginning of a new one is imperative, and I make it sure that an entire entry in my diary is dedicated to the same. This is the time to look back and feel thankful for all that the previous year had had in store for you. At this point I’m reminded of how fortunate I am to have such lovely parents, wonderful friends and adaptable situations. 2008 was a very special year for me. Firstly it marked the end of my school-life thereby acquainting me with a brand new indispensable chapter in my life – my college. It introduced me into the “big booming blogosphere”, of which presently I am, a wee, but all the same a part, itself.

The year was a journey – a journey towards discovering myself. There was a lot to gain, a lot to lose and a lot more to learn from the never ending blunders I’ve made during the year. The year was sure, an experience. And an enriching one, at that. My Christmas vacations at Dubai was awesome. Shopping, partying, cuddling up with Mom, bugging Dad, roaming on the Lexus, hanging out with old friends, relishing on good old pizzas, freaking out on Coldstone Creamery – everything was great. Those eight days were really heavenly, and I was feeling dreadful about having to celebrate the new year without my parents, as I had to report back at college on 29th itself.

Just when I thought things couldn’t get better it actually did. The last two days of the year had us first year students as busy as bees. Of course, not everyone, but the four (Bubbly has not returned after the vacation) of us were seriously involved with the hall decorations for the new year celebrations. We applied for duty leave and bunked two whole days. Yup, we slept, ate and bathed at the auditorium. As in, literally. There was a lot to do – right from cutting out shapes n letters from thermocols to whirling snakes from streamers to creating bows from ribbons, blowing balloons, drafting invitation cards for the staff members, decorating all the notice boards.

The first day was spent entirely for these activities. The second day was mostly spent on beautifying the hall and by the time the programme had started we all were bathed in gilt. Though we were actually working, it never felt like it, I mean, it was more like I was partying with all my friends continuously for two days straight or something. And oh, the guys were of great help. They were always ready to go out to the shops and provide us with whatever that was required. On the first day we made them go and purchase 50 whole packs of gilt in the morning and before mid-day, another 20 of them and so on. The thing is, they do everything with absolutely no hesitation. I mean, almost as though it’s their duty. Believe me, if it wasn’t for them, we would never have completed our job on time. Nope, not even if they had given us a week’s time. And this was a great opportunity to get to know many of them. There was Lanky who was really helpful and very much chivalrous, someone about who every girl there would say, “Wow, what a gentleman!” As a complete contrast there was Pouty, who as his name suggest keeps breaking into pouts every time things don’t go his way. Then there was Pursed Lips, who I’m still not able to figure out. Each time he looks at me there’s this weird sort of a smile, something that goes “I know what you’re thinking” It’s actually freaky. But, god, that guy must have opened his mouth like two times during our entire decoration session. But he was the one who worked the hardest, very much living up to the popular saying, “Those who talk less, work more” . Then There’s Lil Guy. Though that fellow was in my class right from the beginning of the sem, I’ve maintained just a hi-bye relationship with him. I always thought he was the studious nerdish type, and man, I was so wrong. He’s got this totally cool witty side to him as well, which many are not aware of. And I never thought we could have common topics to discuss but we talked for a good half an hour at a stretch while decorating the cut outs, much to Soda Glass’s displeasure. The three of us were assigned the same job, you see.

And I really don’t know why, whenever I and Soda Glass work together, some rascal or the other would play “Khuda Jaane” on his phone and come running to keep it between us. I mean, people really think there’s something going on. But believe me, there’s nothing of that sort. At least, I don’t have anything. Ok, whatever. Seriously, I'm sick of saying this to people.

Mom and Dad were at the airport the last time they called, which was about an hour back. So I guess they might be flying now.

Wishing you a safe journey. Miss you guys!
