Oops I did it again!

For the googol-th time! No, I mean, the gazillion-th time. Um, gazillion’s supposed to be greater than googol, right? OK, just what does that matter when I did it, AGAIN! Yeah, the gazillionth mistake of my life – purchasing the much talked about book, “The 3 mistakes of my life”. So this time Chetan is back with a “story about business, cricket and religion”. Though the title did not instill much interest in me, I thought I’d buy it all the same, as I was a big time fan of Chetan Bhagat’s. And frankly, he has disappointed me.

Though this book possesses every ingredient required to strike a chord with the youth of India– friendship, politics, cricket, romance etc – everything gives you nothing but a sense of déjà vu. If you have read Five Point Someone you’d probably know what I mean. The basic story line’s the same – three friends who dream big end up screwing up their careers. Only that in this book, the whole set up is not all that hi-fi when compared to the former.

Actually, more than reading a book I felt like I was flipping through a daily newspaper. It was more like a series of newspaper events arranged one after the other. Believe me, there wasn’t a single event that Chetan had missed out on, it had everything, right from the Gujarat Earthquake in Jan 2001 to the 9/11 disaster to the India vs Australia test matches to the Godhra Riots. You name it, the book has it.

Chetan Bhagat tells the story of three friends – Govind, Ish and Omi- who dream of owning a business. Set against the backdrop of Ahmedabad in the year 2000, Govind is a born businessman who thinks that people would give you more respect if you have a business rather than if you are at service. Ish is a military drop out who has an immense passion for cricket. Omi is a confused soul, unaware of what he wants from life. Together they take their baby steps into the world of business by opening a cricket shop in Ahmedabad. As an aside, we have Govind falling in love with Vidya for whom he takes maths tuitions. Apparently, she is Ish’s seventeen year old sister, as well.

Two thirds of this book is on cricket. Again, newspapers and cricket data books (I didn’t know they even existed until I read this book) would have come in really handy to the author. And, why cricket? I’ll tell you. When Tushar Raheja’s first book released in 2006, he announced right then that his second book would be a novel based on cricket. And as of yet, the book has not been released. Hmm, now doesn’t that tell us something? Now if the guy releases the book everyone would accuse him of stealing Chetan’s idea, which would be really bad, because what has happened is exactly the opposite, and people are hardly aware of that. Cricket is Tushar’s first love and he has always aspired to play for the Indian team someday. I wonder if that book would ever come out now. I hope it does. Tushar had promised me, once, that he would name one of his characters after me, after I told him that Mahima means the same as Tejas and Shreya. *blushes*. And no, I’m not kidding!

Oh and there’s another thing about Chetan which really made me go up in fumes. I think that guy’s seen only one particular type of girls. I mean, what the hell does he think about women? Why is it that the girls in all his stories have to be so perverted? Why is his view so distorted when it comes to girls? Why should girls always take the first step? And why should boys have all the fun and no blame? This book sort of reminded me of the movie Dil, Dosti etc. Remember how that sick looking curly haired guy used to hang out with that Kintu female in the name of chemistry tuitions? Only that it’s Maths here and not Chem. And then the same old story repeats.

One thing I noticed about “The 3 mistakes…” is that half the book is crammed with facts and that too boring ones, which don’t really help in making it anything even less than a page-turner. There wasn’t really any room for creativity and unfortunately Chetan hasn’t improved much post his debut. On the contrary, going by the FPS terms this book is light years behind. With all those melodramatic elements and “kahani-mein-twists” , this story has everything potentially needed to be adapted into a typical Bollywood flick. But as far as the book is concerned, I don’t have anything much to say. If this wasn’t a Chetan Bhagat book may be I would have labeled it a “not bad”. I had certain expectations from this writer and sadly, this book isn’t up to the mark. Read it if you have too much time or money to waste. But come to think of it, the best thing about this book is the price tag labeled against the cover. Ninety five bucks is pretty reasonable, I guess.

PS. Ok, this has nothing to do with this review, but I really gotta say this. I was just over the moon at reading this. A whole post dedicated to me! Thank you Aditi!:)

Yeah, this book was slightly disappointing and that I think was because it got too repetitive. I agree with you when you say he writes similar books, similar situations and very similar characters, especially the female ones and his lead character. The lead character is always this not so handsome self deprecating guy Neha, Priyanka and Vidya are all just about the same. But oh well, they weren't so perverted, were they? I mean, it's okay I think. I don't know.

The book did have it's moments though. There were two I really liked. One being the part where the kid refuses to play for Australia and says that he'll play in his country and the second being where Omi goes against his Mama. Those 2 moments had substance alright. Otherwise it was mostly like a newspaper. But the way he related everything with his characters was good. You know, the way the Godhra riots and the earthquake affected them and all. Could have been better though. I hope he tries something different next time.

hey mahi... :) hope ur doing gr88.. i bought the book too, actually i thot it was OK... i mean not OK in a very nice way but Ok in a ok way.. lol.... i kinda felt the book was something that couldve actually happened.. meaning there was none of the wierd things that set fiction apart from reality... and the chem tuitions... with vidya part was kinda euu... i am sure he couldve put tht in a better way... the natural disasters, accidents and othr things did seem real though. nice review dear.. :)

um mahi? isnt that just...a bit too..i donno..mean? because obviously you cant acuse him of having stolen thushars idea. i understand your liking towards tushar. but everybody have their own favourites and i like chetan way way more than thushar. if thushar said he's gonna write a book about cricket and never wrote it and if somebody else writes a book on the subject in the meantime it would no way mean that the idea was copied! and even if it was, no two persons can have the exact same ideas. about cricket that is. what thushar was going to write cant be the exact same thing what chetan could have written.
and about cricket data books. he would have to use those, wont he? he cant just put in false data. well, he could maybe. but it would seem more realistic if they were real, dont you think?
ok i agree with you that the book wasnt as good as his first one. but come on, give him a break! i think he did do a good job. it made me so engrossed i didnt keep the book down until i was completely done with it. so it has to mean something right? unlike thushars book. remember how just before i left for india you were re-reading thushars book? and you told me that its so good n that you were enjoying every word n everything.so i bought the book. and tho i've read it earlier i'd totally forgotten the whole thing. so anyway i bought it again but then it was just plain boring. i cant read it more than once. its nice, but not worthy of reading a second time, you know? whereas chetan's books.. i could totally read them a second time and not yawn or flip thru pages looking for something interesting. again, this is my opinion. everybody has their own likings.

and everybody i know who've read this book said it was pretty good. nothing to feel too disappointed about. nor agonize about spent money.

ps: awww how cute! isnt aditi that little girl in our school?

@harsh: yeah, cud be adapted into a bollywood movie!

@bikram: yeah? Well i haven't read any of her books till now. wanted to read namesake badly. I thought Chetan's first book was great and his second was ok-ok. But this one...ew.
OH MY GOD!!!! That guy is your classmate? SERIOUSLY? Um well then, he may be not all that disgusting after all. Actually he looks fine, it was his character which made him look all sick n stuff. :D

Mahi said...

@sam: Thanks! Yeah he really needs to do something about it. I know, that was sweet of Aditi!

@Ish: Yeah, his lead charecters are all sterotypic with low self esteem. And about Vidya, I mean, cmon, that guy was her tutor. Imagine a girl of seventeen seducing her tutor. Even I liked that part where Ali said I'd always play for my country, India. That was the only incident out of the many which actually remains in my heart. Still with all the standards his first book has set, this one is bad. Just plain bad.

Mahi said...

@Vidya: I'm doing okay, hope ur fine! Lol yeah, i know what you mean alright:D Well that's true, these are incidents which could happen to anyone. but the vidya- tuitions part was a lil too much! Too bad he named her after you :P

@gayatri: thanks:)

May be not. But considering her age and the guy being her tutor and also her bro's best friend, what else do I call her? But of course that's just what I think:)

Mahi said...

@Aditi: Hey, I've read Paulo Coelho's books. But both these books are of different genre, so you cannot really compare. But Paulo's Alchemist was awesome!

@chriz:welcome back! Of course I remember you. Will be readin n commenting on your soon:)

Mahi said...

@blue butterfly: hehe! It keeps you hooked at some places, especially towards the last few chapters. Even though you don't like it, you screw up your face and just keep turning the pages to know the climax. That's one thing about Chetan. Lol yeah, for all those people who missed out on the 2000-2001 newspapers this is a good way of getting awared!

@Ferri: oh oh girl, calm down. Well that's how the whole book business n marketing runs. Chetan's FPS was the best selling novel of 2005 and Tushar's "Anything for you ma'am" was the best selling one of 2006, because of which, clearly, both of them have become big time rivals. There's always a who-writes-faster-than who competition happening out there in the book world. I know coz that's what the publishers told us. And who said Tushar never wrote it? He completed his book last November and till now it's not out. And Chetan's "Three mistakes" was totally unheard of until it actually came out. Chetan has covered everything possible about cricket in his book including the minute details. There's nothing left to write now. I don't know if Chetan copied Tushar's ideas or not, I just wrote what I felt. And you say you cannot read Tushar's book for a second time. Bur as for me, I can read it a hundred times and not get bored. Like you said, everyone has their own favourites and I'm not biased in any way. I reviewed both the books with the same eye and this is what I finally felt. Don't you think Chetan's getting a lil too repetitive? I mean, it's just the old wine in a new bottle. What we need at the moment is variety.

PS Cute girl in our school?

Its entertaining but but a bad literary work. Movies used to come out of books now here we have a book which is a combination of N Bollywood movies :D
